In the case of food choking two supplementary aids can be appllied :

The Heimlich maneuver

It consists of brutally compressing the higher part of the abdomen (above the navel) to provoke a suppression inside the thorax and expulse the object out of the breathing passage.

* On a person standing or sitting :
- Stand behind the victim.
- Place your arms under his and round the waist.
- Place one of your closed fists (palm towards the ground) in the hollow part of his stomach (above the navel and under the triangle of the ribcage).
- Seize your fist with your other hand.
- Maintain your elbows far apart so that you dont crush the victims ribcage.
- If the victim is standing, put your leg between his legs to enable you to get good hold.
- Thrust the fist with a firm blow towards you and up.
- Repeat this action until the object is dislodged.

* On a person lyind down :
- Put yourself astride on the victims thighs (victim lying on his back).
- Put the heal of one of your hand in the hollow part of the stomach (above the navel and under the triangle of the ribcage).
- Put your other hand on top of the first hand.
- Push firmly towards the ground and then up towards the victims head.
- Repeat this action until the object is dislodged.

* On a pregnant woman sitting or standing :
The pressure is not towards the abdomen but to the thorax,
The pressure is not oriented upwards.
- Stand behind the victim.
- Place your hands under her armpits.
- Place one of your closed fists (palm towards to ground in the middle of her sternum) be careful not to be near the lower part of the sternum.
- Seize your fists with your other hand.
- Maintain the elbows apart so that you are not pushing on the victims ribcage.
- If the victim is standing, put your leg between his legs to enable you to get good hold.
- Thrust the fist towards you.
- Repeat this action until the object is dislodged.

* On a pregnant woman lying down :
The pressure is not towards the abdomen but towards the thorax,
The pressure is not oriented towards the victims head.
- Go on your knees next to the victim (person lying on her back).
- Place your hands one on top of the other in the middle of the chest, your shoulders vertical to your hands (as if you were practising a cardiac massage).
- Push your hands rapidly in a downward movement, arms straight out, elbows blocked then release.
- Repeat this action until the object is dislodged.

For infants and children under three years of age the Heimlich maneuver is not applicable. You have to use the Mofenson maneuver

The Mofenson maneuver

- Place the child on his belly over the lower part of your arm or thigh, face towards the ground.
- Support him with your hand on his shoulder.
- With th flat part of your hand give him 4 or 5 taps between his shoulder blades.
- Repeat this action until the object is dislodged (if the breathing passage is free but the object has not been spat out take it out of the child's mouth with your fingers, be careful not to push it back down the child's throat).
