Jean-Claude Collard's quite simple idea will save lives We should have thought of it and he did. The easiest inventions are often the best and precisely as a matter of simplicity Jean-Claude Collard wouldn't have been able to find anything else better. This invention of this Catovien : a tiny hole, a 5 mm² opening... which saves life. Explanations.

Every year nearly four thousands people die in France from an "alimentary wrong way", we mean they have swallowed the wrong way. The sweet, the capsule, the tablet, instead of getting into your alimentary canal, goes into your trachea. The thing sticks and prevents the air from getting into and out of your lungs. In two minutes you die from suffocation. It's horrible! The "alimentary wrong way" represents the second cause of mortality for domestic accidents. Children and seniors are the most exposed.

Jean-Claude Collard's idea is quite simply brilliant : Driving a hole into tablets, sweets, capsules... It is enough that a 5 mm² ventilation canal should be driven, to let the passage of a thin stream of 8 litres of air, to avoid, in that manner, the immediate suffocation and increase considerably the survival, waiting for the first aid.
Besides, this principle of precaution is already applied to non eatable elements, such as ball-pens or markers caps and just as some toys or plastic bags. "This invention, is really a conjunction of circumstances. My son who plays with pen caps, the meeting with the manager of the BIC society, the death of near relations by suffocation... It was two years ago. At that time, with two other co-inventors, we have decided to patent our invention "Safety Channel"." Consequences, last May 11th, the Lépine Competition Special Prize, named from his creator, an old prefect of the Paris police, is awarded to the inventors of Safety Channel, from Renaud Dutreil's hands, the Secretary of State to PME (small and medium firms) and Gérard Lorey's hands, the president of the famous Competition, rewarding this innovation in the category of medical progress.

Today, Jean-claude and his colleagues are working on the second part of their plan which won't be the easiest part. Inded, if the interest of the invention is admitted by everyone and especially by the Medical profession, today they must convince. Convince important laboratories and sweets firms. They represent enormous markets to which the Catovien grapples with. Also convince a strong and robust investor, able to start and promote a very important campaign for the prevention and the communication. Jean-claude is sure of it : "I am convinced it will work; but I don't know when! The firm that will do the first step will inevitably involve all the others behind it. The quicker we'll do, the more lives we will save" is Jean-claude Collard's firm conclusion.

The suffocations by alimentary wrong ways among adults.

"... The study is five years long, from requests of the Institute of forensic medicine for autopsies, on two departements of the Parisian region, with a parallel study of the activity of the service for emergency medical help (SAMU) for that pathology..."

"... In 1759, Louis presents in front of the Royal Academy of Surgery the "Memoir on bronchotomies", in which he counted 28 cases of exterior objects ; one of them was involving a bilateral sus clavicle emphysem, occured 48 hours after the inhalation of a bean..."

In 1854, Samuel D.Gross publishes the symptology of exterior objects, considered as a reference in the treatise upon exterior objects inhaled : "How many persons have died, maybe in a moment, during a burst out laughing after an amusing anecdote or a joke, from the obstuction of the glottis because of a piece of meat, of bread or of cheese, or a mouthful of mashed potatoes, without their environment suspecting the real cause..."

"... The person physiologically old is particularly subject to alimentary wrong ways, without showing any precise trouble of swallowing :
-The chewing is often less effective and the saliva is insufficient.
-The pharynx-larynx may show a hypoaesthesia with a diminution more or less marked of the reflex of cough ..."

"... The incidence of death by alimentary wrong way is superior to the incidence of air accidents, fire-arms and snake-bitings..."

"... During these last four years, the SAMU 78 has operated on 101 cases of respiratory exterior objects among adults. Twenty cardio-respiratory breakings were counted, among them 11 deaths.
The age of these patients are situated between 16 and 95 years with a global average of 66,9 years..."

"... Numerous are the cases of reiterated alimentary wrong ways. Taking over this affection should be global, with good information of the environment, well adapted dietetics, a possible reeducation of swallowing and of course a correction of the predisposing factors if possible..."

Until Sunday, it's fifteen days of annual glory for independant inventors at the "Fore de Paris".
Better than the wheel Mr Jean-Claude Collard invented the hole and is very proud of it. He is a 58 year old of management, on the 101 edition "Concours Lépine" he presented his invention, the hole for pastilles and tablets "to avoid asphyzia swallowed the wrong way".
His concept, he reproduced the hole as the caps of the Bic pens. He has registred his patent in Europe and the USA. With friends he has invested 75.000 Euros.
His ambition is to sell to pharmaceutical and Confectioners his idea.
